Growing is Therapeutic
Why is growing plants therapeutic?
Caring for plants can reduce physiological and psychological stress as compared with mental work. This may be because caring for plants suppresses sympathetic nervous system, and promotes comfortable, relaxed and natural feelings.
Case studies have shown that participants that were given (2) different tasks: repotting a houseplant or completing a short computer-based task. Through measuring biological factors associated to stress researchers found that indoor gardening lowered the stress response in participants. Whereas, the heart rate and blood pressure spiked in those participants when performing the computer task.
In other studies, it was determined that real plants may sharpen your attention. Researchers put students in a classroom with either a fake plant, a real one, a photograph of a plant, or no plant at all. Brain scans showed that the students who studied with real, live plants in the classroom were more attentive and better able to concentrate than in the other groups.
